Five federal by-elections will be held on Monday, notably in the Montreal riding of Saint-Laurent, a Liberal stronghold left vacant by the departure of Stéphane Dion. The former Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is now Canada's ambassador to Germany and the European Union, had been elected eight times to represent Saint-Laurent, without interruption, since 1996. The candidates are Liberal Emmanuella Lambropoulos, Conservative Jimmy Yu, William Fayad of the Bloc Quebecois, Mathieu Auclair of the New Democratic Party and Green Party member Daniel Green. Ontario voters in Ottawa-Vanier and Markham-Thornhill, and Albertans in Calgary Heritage and Calgary Midnapore are also going to the polls. Those four constituencies were represented by big names: Liberal Mauril Bélanger, who died last August, former Liberal Minister of Immigration John McCallum, former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper and former Conservative minister Jason Kenney.
