Karim Jean-Gilles, the Brossard dog owner who owned the dogs that severely disfigured a 7-year-old girl in a park in 2015, was handed a four-year prison sentence Friday by a Superior Court judge.
Jean-Gilles was found guilty of criminal negligence causing bodily harm in February.
On the afternoon of Sept. 20, 2015, Jean-Gilles' mother was walking two of his dogs in Brossard's Marquise Park when one of them suddenly lunged after young Vanessa Biron, attacking her face and dragging her across the park for several meters.
The girl was left with fractures to her skull and hand, scars on her face, and a badly broken cheekbone. One side of her face remains paralyzed.
Her parents testified she wasn't able to eat solid food for months after the attack, and to this day continues to see a psychiatrist.
The dogs weren't on a leash at the time of the attack, and prosecutors suggested Jean-Gilles' mother wasn't capable of properly handling the dogs.
