On the evening of his first day in office, Brazil's new far-right President Jair Bolsonaro removed the LGBT+ community from the coverage of the country's Human Rights Ministry.
It comes as a part of a package of executive orders that take direct aim at minority groups in the country. They were signed into law by the authoritarian nationalist Wednesday evening.
Gay couples rushed to wed last month in Brazil in advance of Bolsonaro taking office, concerned that his administration would curtail the rights of same-sex couples to marry.
The former army captain has in the past made incendiary remarks about the LGBT+ community, saying in 2011 that he would be "unable to love" a gay son. The new President's human rights minister is ultraconservative evangelical pastor Damares Alves, who has claimed in the past that diversity in Brazil has "threatened" the family.
