The president of Montreal's union of blue collar workers has avoided a vote of confidence that could have ousted her from power, this after being accused of spying on other union executives.
Chantal Racette was noticeably shaken after a union meeting in Rosemont on Saturday, where a motion for a no-confidence vote was narrowly rejected by those in attendance. The initial vote on whether to hold a no-confidence vote was a near-tie, with the side against the motion winning the vote with only 50.6 per cent support.
Hundreds of union members were present, out of the roughly 6,500 blue collar workers that are employed by the city of Montreal.
Recently, Racette was accused of spying on two other union executives, and she has also taken heat for throwing her support behind a meeting during work hours that was later considered an illegal walkout.
