Quebec Public Security Minister is doubling down on his promise to legislate an end to end the wearing of camouflage pants by police officers.
"This is a practice that is not acceptable," he said Wednesday, telling reporters he plans to introduce legislation at the National Assembly that will compel an end to the pants protest. “This is a practice we should no longer tolerate."
Coiteux said earlier this week he was going to let negotiations between police and the government continue in hopes the pressure tactic by officers could be ended amicably, but quickly changed his tune.
Police began wearing non-uniformed pants in the summer of 2014 in protest of the government cutting its pension contributions to public sector employees
As an essential service unable to strike, the Montreal Police Brotherhood has said the pants protest is one of very few pressure tactics available to its union members.
