Your parking app is about to get a whole lot smarter.
A new company "Passport" is taking over the contract and they're considering integrating all kinds of transportation payment systems into the app - making getting around the city more convenient than ever.
"This platform will be user-friendly," says Charles Auger, GM of Stationnment Montreal. "From there we can build new functions for the next coming years."
Imagine checking your app to see if there's a parking spot left near your office - or getting a discount code from a local merchant when you park nearby to shop.
These are very real possibilities according to Auger - and he says the app could go way beyond just parking.
"We would like also to offer the users to pay for the bus, for the metro, or for the Bixi," he says.
Passport has done similar things in other major cities like Chicago, Boston, and Vancouver, but there are major challenges to implementing some of the technology.
Sensors will have to be affixed to each parking spot to determine their availability.
Plans are in the works, and they hope that within the next 5 years - all Montrealers will need to rent a bike, a car, find and pay for a parking spot, or hop on a bus will be a tap of the thumb.
