The federal government announced the Atwater Library and Computer Centre of the Mechanics' Institute of Montreal will get nearly $100,000 in funding.
The investment is funded through the National Cost-Sharing Program for Heritage Places which ensures the protection of national historic sites, heritage lighthouses and railway stations. The money will go towards maintaining the library's arched windows, which have been in place since construction on the building finished in 1920.
Federal transport minister Marc Garneau says the funding will ensure the preservation of one of Montreal's treasured national historic sites for future generations. Atwater Library Capital Campaign co-chair Hon. W. David Angus calls the building "a hub of community life in Montreal" and says conservation of the building is essential to serve the population.
The government is investing around 20 million dollars in heritage sites across Canada.
