A Montreal artist that tried to pass off his work as that of famed Quebec master Jean-Paul Riopelle has been acquitted of forgery in a Montreal court.
The Crown agreed the case was not a matter of public interest and worth pursuing.
While not recognized to the degree of Riopelle, one of Quebec's most famous painters, Michel Vermeulen has seen some recognition around the world as an artist; according to his website, he has had work appear in exhibitions from Barcelona to New York to Milan. He also claims to be the "only student of the greatest Canadian painter Jean-Paul Riopelle."
But the 56 year old was caught trying to sell a painting on eBay for nearly $300,000, supposedly signed by the famed lyrical abstractionist.
He will also be allowed to have the painting back, but must alter it with the correct signature of the true artist.
