Well-known Montreal lawyer Anne-France Goldwater is dropping hints that she may challenge Denis Coderre in next year's Montreal mayoralty election.
Goldwater has been an outspoken critic of the mayor, and was especially vocal as the debate over the administration's pit bull ban reached its peak, likening Coderre to Donald Trump at a pro-pit bull rally last month,
Now, she's taking issue with Coderre's recent trip to Iran, where he met with his counterpart in Tehran to sign a "cooperation deal" — at the taxpayer's expense.
Goldwater says that's unacceptable, saying it lends legitimacy to a terrorist regime.
"I don't pay property taxes for my mayor to travel to visit a terrorist regime that oppresses women, minority groups, that oppresses gays and lesbians, that punishes apostasy by death," Goldwater says.
She also points out Canada has not had diplomatic relations with Iran since 2012.
Goldwater, meantime, says she's "reflecting" on whether to take a run at the mayor's job in 2017, but suggests that that reflection is in its very early stages.
For now, she wants to see what kind of opposition Coderre will have in the election, which is due to take place a little more than a year from now.
"I wouldn't want to discourage other serious candidates from making a run," Goldwater says. "I'm sure there are good candidates that are preparing their [candidacies] for a long time...but if things stay the way they are, maybe my reflection will become more serious."
