Luis Miranda's Equipe Anjou has booted Lynne Shand from the party's caucus, leaving the councillor to sit as an independent.
Shand has been the subject of multiple calls for something to be done, after she complained on her Facebook page Sunday following a visit to her ophthalmologist, who she says was wearing a hijab.
“Who was the ophthalmologist? A veiled woman,” she wrote. “If it wasn’t an emergency I would have refused to be treated by her.”
Later, she wrote that while the care she received was "excellent", in the next breath she wrote that "they're Islamizing Quebec and soon we'll be like France."
As she tried to explain her comments, she suggested she was not an Islamophobe, but simply in favor of feminism and religious neutrality.
An online petition is now circulating urging she resign her council seat, and Montreal mayor Valérie Plante said she'll have the city's ethics advisor investigate the comments.
On Tuesday, city council speaker Cathy Wong filed a formal complaint against Shand with Quebec's Municipal Commission, calling her comments "xenophobic".
