Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says that Quebec Premier Francois Legault needs to get off his high horse and realize that when Alberta does well, Canada does well.
Notley made the comments at a press conference Tuesday where she announced the province is looking for companies interested in building a new oil refinery in Alberta.
The western Premier was responding to Legault who, when speaking about the Energy East pipeline, called Alberta's oil "dirty energy" and adding there's no "social acceptability" for a pipeline in Quebec.
"There’s a high level of hypocrisy that I think most Canadians are growing increasingly frustrated with," Notley told the room.
"[Francois Legault] needs to look at what’s in the ground, and he needs to understand that not only is our product not dirty, but that it actually funds the schools, the hospitals, the roads and potentially even some of the hydroelectricity infrastructure in Quebec.”
This week Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau announced Quebec will get $13.1 billion in equalization payments in the coming year, an increase of almost $1.4 billion. Alberta will not qualify for equalization payments in 2018–2019.
