Imagine if there was a high-tech device that could help you find a parking spot on the street or at the mall.
Well, there could well be an app on the way for that.
It's called the Rumbo Parking Module - a device installed on existing parking meters.
"It starts transmitting the parking vacancy to a cloud and then to your phone," said co-founder of Montreal company Rumbo Parking, German Torres in an interview on the Aaron Rand Show on CJAD 800.
"It will tell you in advance where there's actually a free spot and you can actually just drive directly to it instead of just wandering around."
And Torres said you can reserve the spot. And woe be to the motorist who snatches that reserved spot.
"It's up to each city that decides what happens in that situation - it's either a penalty or something should happen but it's really up to the city to decide. The tow truck scenario is one of the examples," said Torres.
The device will tell you in real time if the space is free or not.
"It shows yellow so you'll know that something's up and you shouldn't park there. Same thing with red - that means it's occupied," said Torres.
Torres said they're testing the app in several Canadian cities as well as Stuttgart in Germany.
The app should be free at first but Torres couldn't say if a premium would be applied on top of the parking charge.
The app could be ready to download by year's end.
