Nearly a year since the start of the 2017 flooding across the province, the overwhelming majority of victims continue to wait for the financial assistance promised by the Public Security Minister.
Numbers obtained by the CAQ and shared with TVA show that 6,070 claims were submitted to the government compensation program. Of those only 457 have been settled (work completed and all invoices approved).
That works out to 7.5 per cent.
The data also revealed that 93 families continue to live in hotels since being forced from their homes.
Broken down by region, Laval residents have seen the least amount of progress having their claims go through, sitting at five per cent. Residents in the Laurentians haven't had much of an easier time with seven per cent of claims finalized. The Montreal and Outaouais regions have seen eight and nine per cent of its cases settled.
In September flood victims were complaining they were having a hard time reaching government agents in charge of the compensation program and even when they did they spoke of confusion adding they were often asked to send the same documents in over and over again.
Sylvie D'Amours, CAQ MNA for Mirabel, told the French news network it's appalling that Quebecers have had to deal with this type of situation.
