Space is at a premium at the Montreal morgue and officials have issued a call for relatives to come forward.
Chief Coroner Catherine Rudel-Tessier says there are 138 refrigerated units at the facility with 89 bodies unclaimed.
She tells the Journal de Montreal that there has never been such a situation before.
Rudel-Tessier says even if the people are identified and relatives contacted, there are often instances where family members refuse to claim the bodies.
Rudel-Tessier says because space is at a premium pathologists are working to complete examinations and return bodies to relatives as soon as possible.
