Quebec health officials confirm 54 people have died from possible heat-related complications.
The Quebec Public Health Department released their latest figures as of 3:30 p.m.
The number of Montreal victims now stands at 28. The rest:
- 9 in the Eastern Townships;
- 7 in the Mauricie;
- 6 in the Montérégie;
- 1 each in Laval, Lanaudière, Laurentians, and Quebec City/Chaudière-Appalaches.
Environment Canada lifted heat warnings for the next several days.
While the stifling weather also blanketed Ontario and parts of Atlantic Canada, no deaths have been reported elsewhere, in part because various jurisdictions have different ways of gathering data on heat-related fatalities.
While hot weather is expected to remain in Quebec next week, Serge Mainville of Environment Canada says it will be a dry heat.
Montreal-area paramedics aren't expecting a big drop-off in calls today despite the more bearable conditions.
Montreal civil security is no longer conducting an official door-to-door operation checking in on seniors and others vulnerable to the heat. But firefighters are doing the checks as part of their normal inspections for smoke detectors and they are focussing on rooming houses.
