While many Quebec families were giving thanks this long weekend, others had their lives changed forever.
Over the three day Thanksgiving holiday at least five people were killed on Quebec roads. That number could rise as at least four others remain in hospital in critical condition.
Police are still trying to determine what caused a head-on collision between a van and tanker truck on Highway 138 in Charlevoix on Sunday. A mother and her two children were in the van; a 5-year-old boy was killed in the crash. The second boy was treated for serious injuries while the mother was hospitalized for nervous shock.
A fatal accident Saturday afternoon near St-Lazare could end with a woman being charged with dangerous driving causing death.
A 30-year-old woman from Gatineau was killed after the car she was in crossed the median into opposite traffic on Highway 40. The vehicle struck two cars before ending up off the road.
The woman was on her way to Montreal with two other people, having organized the trip through an online ride sharing service. One of the other passengers had texted his girlfriend several times throughout the trip, including one just moments before the crash, about how reckless the other woman was driving. He mentioned how she had already lost control at least five times.
The male passenger and female driver were both taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Provincial police continue to investigate.
A 58-year-old man was killed after losing control of his car Monday morning in Chesterville, in the Centre-du-Quebec region.
Sûreté du Québec investigators said alcohol may have been involved, and the man was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Quebec Bureau of Independent Investigators is investigating a very brief police chase that ended with the death of a 20-year-old man.
At about 3:00 A.M. Monday provincial police noticed a car speeding on Highway 30. When the officers attempted to pull the driver over, he shut off his headlights and took off. Just over one minute later the driver hit a concrete barrier near Highway 930 in Candiac.
The driver, 20, was taken to hospital in critical condition. The 20-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Last year provincial police reported one fatality on Quebec roads during the three day Thanksgiving weekend.
Outside of provincial police jurisdiction, a 23-year-old woman died after her car hit a tree and part of a home on Du Bord de l'Eau St. in Laval Sunday morning. Police continue to investigate but said texting while driving or speeding may have been factors.
