It seems spending on Montreal's 375th anniversary celebrations exceeded the official budget of $125 million.
The Journal de Montréal searched though thousands of invoices related to the celebrations, and found additional expenses of nearly a million dollars were not billed to the anniversary committee.
Instead, they were picked up directly by the City of Montreal.
They include a reception for dignitaries at the inauguration of the lights on the Jacques Cartier bridge, which cost an additional $250,000, and the inauguration of Frédérick-Back Park in St. Michel, which cost another $219,000.
The report also suggests another $220,000 was spent just to promote the 375th anniversary celebrations, and another $4,304 was spent on the "signature dessert" of the event — 700 specially-concocted pastries created for the launch party.
