Police in Longueuil were called out to a home in Brossard on Wednesday morning, after receiving a 9-1-1 call from the man living inside.
The man was calling to report there were "intruders" in his home on La Pinière Blvd., but when they arrived, they found 23 dogs and a boa constrictor living in squalid conditions.
The man appeared to be in obvious psychological distress, and was taken to a nearby hospital.
The animals were taken out of the home later by representatives of Quebec's agriculture, fisheries and food ministry (MAPAQ), who then contacted the local Roussillon SPCA.
A volunteer with the SPCA said there is reason to believe the home was being used for breeding purposes.
It doesn't appear the dogs were in any distress, but they will be seen by a veterinarian.
Police are investigating.
