The Sûreté du Québec arrested a 71-year-old man as part of Operation Malaise, an investigation into a sophisticated pedophile ring operating online and across the province.
Denys Benjamin was arrested at his home in Montreal Wednesday. He was later released on condition to appear at the Montreal courthouse on November 11.
Benjamin was charged of sexual contact with a minor, invitation to sexual touching and conspiracy. The alleged offences took place during the 1990s while the victim was about 12-years-old.
According to a report in The Guardian, Benjamin was arrested for gross acts of indecency while doing aid work in Sri Lanka in 1995. Two weeks later he was hired as an English teacher in the children's village of Jari. However the teaching job only lasted a few weeks after it was discovered Benjamin had spent the night with a 12-year-old boy. The incident was never reported to police, even though the child was found almost naked at the time.
