Make no mistake; the legal age to buy marijuana in Quebec will be 21, eventually.
Francois Legault and the CAQ have made no secret their plan to increase the minimum age in the province to buy legalized pot by three years once they are in power.
However, much like kid awake at 4:00 A.M. on Christmas, they will have to wait.
The federal marijuana law comes into effect on October 17. The previous Quebec government passed Bill 157 in June, which set the legal age to consume pot at 18. The CAQ admits there just is not enough time for Francois Legault to name a new cabinet, reopen the law, make the changes and pass it again, all before marijuana sales are legalized.
For now, it's not known when the CAQ will be able to rework the law. Francois Legault is expected to announce his cabinet by the end of the month and on Monday suggested he would call the legislature back before the winter.
Along with raising the minimum age to buy pot, the CAQ will also look to introduce new rules that would ban consuming marijuana in all public places across the province. Bill 157 prohibited using pot in areas where minors could be present, but left any other restrictions up to individual cities.
