Ever gotten a ticket for putting your garbage or recycling out when you're not supposed to?
A 12-year-old Plateau-Mont-Royal boy got a ticket for $272 dollars for doing just that. But his mom is fighting it.
Marianne Dugal said she put out her recycling as she's done for the past two years but this time it was during snow removal late last month with snow piled high everywhere.
Dugal said they weren't removing the snow as announced on her street leaving little room for cars or pedestrians to move around.
She said she and other neighbours had left out their recycling on that day as scheduled but like the snow it wasn't picked up either.
Thirty-six hours later Dugal ended up taking it to a trash bin.
But not before city workers tore the bags open looking for addresses or names. They found a mailing sticker with the name of her 12-year-old son who got the ticket which was sent through priority mail that they picked up at the post office.
"(He was) Shocked and super disappointed. He thought maybe he won something," said Dugal in an interview with CJAD 800 News.
"It's frustrating because they're guilty on so many levels."
Dugal said the borough should send out notices if there's no recycling pickup and to better synchronize snow removal and recycling, adding it's annoying and frustrating to spend time and energy fighting this ticket.
"It's not in any way our fault because they didn't pick up the snow and then they didn't pick up our recycling and then we get a ticket for almost three hundred dollars," said Dugal.
"(They're) trying to make quick money on my back because they didn't do their job."
The borough said since a minor can't be found guilty of such an infraction, the ticket will be withdrawn upon presentation of proof of identity when contesting the ticket.
But spokesman Michel Tanguay said in a statement to CJAD 800 News that they do a lot of advertising about collection hours for garbage and recycling.
He said they get more than 1200 requests in connection with stuff left out when it shouldn't be.
He also said if trash and recycling are left out after the truck passes, then you have to take it back until the next collection and if the truck didn't pass by, then you have to call 311.
