Over one hundred Quebec tourists have finally been flown back to Montreal, after being stranded in Haiti as violent street protests began to strangle the country.
An Air Transat flight carried the 113 passengers, along with several who had been scheduled to fly with other airlines. The Airbus A310 landed just after 9:00 p.m. at Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport in Dorval.
The passengers had to be airlifted to the airport via helicopter early Saturday morning from their resort, located west of Port-au-Prince.
The provincial and federal governments helped co-ordinate the evacuation effort alongside Air Transat.
Protesters in Haiti are demanding the resignation of President Jovenel Moise, angry about rapid inflation and the government refusing to prosecute a Venezuelan firm accused of embezzlement. The demonstrations have claimed several lives over the past week.
