A man from Labelle, Quebec has pulled off what many would call impossible.
On August 3, 2015, Vincent Laramée found himself in some hot water with police after he was clocked doing 176 km/h in a 90km/h zone. He was given a $1,050 ticket, 18 demerit points and his car was impounded.
Most people would be stuck with the penalties, but Laramée successfully argued it was not his fault.
He told a judge that his car's cruise control had malfunctioned. He said after setting it at 100 km/h and activating ECO mode the car began to accelerate on its own, regardless of what he did to try and stop it.
Once he was being chased down by police Laramée threw his car in to neutral, deactivating the cruise controlling, allowing him to come to a stop.
He showed the court an examination of his car's cruise control system which showed a circuit had been fried, causing it to malfunction.
Judge Michel Lalande ruled that Laramée was not being reckless, and had no intentions of breaking the law.
However, in his testimony Laramée said he set his cruise control at 100 km/h, 10 km/h more than the legal limit, so the judge reduced the fine to just $35.
